Biography

Courtney McDermott joined the ExCollege as the Associate Director in 2023. Previously, she worked at the Center for the Humanities at Tufts. She is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and has an MFA in creative writing from the University of Notre Dame. Her debut collection of short stories, How They Spend Their Sundays (Whitepoint Press), was nominated for the PEN/Hemingway Award and The Story Prize. Her collection was inspired by her time as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lesotho. In addition to her experience as a higher ed administrator, she has taught creative writing for the last 10 years.

Outside of work, she likes to read multiple books at once, watch Nordic Noir, bake, travel, and explore North Shore beaches with her husband, young son, and dog, Georgia.
