Auditing for Breadth
EXP-0106: Auditing for Breadth is designed to provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to broaden their education by attending courses in which they would not otherwise enroll.
Program Structure
A student may audit no more than three courses over the course of their undergraduate career and receive one Auditing for Breadth credit per course, with a grade of “Pass.” The course you audit must be at least 3 credits. Courses that are less than 3 credits cannot be audited. It is possible to audit a wide range of courses across the university, so long as you receive permission from the instructor. Keep in mind, however, that certain courses lend themselves more easily to being audited. Courses where a high degree of participation is critical—a lab course or a seminar, for example—may not be appropriate. In all cases, it is up to the instructor to decide whether auditing a particular course makes sense, and what type of assignments or activities you would need to complete, if any.
How To Do It - Beginning of the Semester
Read this information carefully.
Permission and Attendance
For each course you audit, you need to get permission from the instructor and work out an arrangement covering your responsibilities. The expectation is that you will attend all classes. You may not miss more than one class once the audit has been approved. Beyond that, depending upon the course in question, you may be asked to do some key reading, take part in certain class activities, add to discussion posts, see a film, and the like, as the instructor deems necessary.
Complete the Form with the Instructor
Each time you audit a course, you need to submit the Auditing for Breadth Agreement Form. At the beginning of the semester, you fill out the course information, the instructor, and any additional requirements beyond regular attendance.
Once you submit the form, the instructor will receive an email notification to sign and acknowledge that the agreement is in place.
Once the instructor signs the form, it will be forwarded to the ExCollege.
The form must be received by the ExCollege no later than 5:00pm on the day of the ADD deadline.
Permission to Enroll in EXP-0106: Auditing for Breadth
After the signed agreement form is returned to the ExCollege at the beginning of the semester, you will be given permission in SIS to enroll in EXP-0106: Auditing for Breadth. This is the mechanism by which you will receive credit. The name of the audited course will also appear in the Notes section of your transcript.
DO NOT REGISTER for the course you are auditing.
End of the Semester
Obtain Final Signature of Instructor
Right before the last class, the instructor will be asked sign once again, this time indicating that you have met the terms of your agreement. The form will then be filed by the ExCollege.
Auditing Reflection
The last requirement is a 300-400 word Auditing Reflection written and submitted within one week after classes end during the semester of your audit. Please email it to Chris Clark, Program Administrator, at chris.clark@tufts.edu.
Your reflection may include comments on why you audited this particular course, how it may have fit into your educational experience at Tufts, how it may have expanded your knowledge, and what you got out of the auditing program in general.
Additional Information
Please contact the ExCollege if you have questions about whether a particular course would be a good fit for auditing: excollege@tufts.edu.
There are no penalties for not completing the program.
